About SKM

Saskatchewan’s official voice for masonry.

Our Roots.

The Saskatchewan Masonry Institute (SMI) was incorporated in 1980 when members of the Saskatoon and Regina Masonry Contractors Associations joined together to form a province-wide organization.

But the roots of SMI go much deeper – back to the province’s early years. The first building boom attracted skilled bricklayers and stone masons from eastern Canada and Europe. Their workmanship lives on in many of our finest buildings – land titles offices, court houses, schools, hospitals and more.

Today, SMI is the official voice of the masonry industry in the province. It is comprised of professional masonry contractors, producers, and suppliers who are dedicated to the promotion of quality masonry wall systems.

The Importance of Masonry.

Masonry is a cornerstone of quality construction. It provides unmatched strength, fire resistance, and energy efficiency while offering a timeless aesthetic that enhances communities for generations. Choosing masonry means investing in safety, durability, and lasting value.

Our Values.

SKM is dedicated to advancing masonry by promoting its benefits to industry stakeholders, supporting apprenticeship training, and investing in technical innovation. Through collaboration with design professionals, developers, government agencies, and educational boards, SMI ensures the trade is represented, the workforce is skilled, and the industry continues to evolve with strong technical support at both local and national levels.

SKM promotes and markets masonry to a variety of stakeholders – design professionals, owners & developers, government agencies and municipalities.

SKM represents employers on apprenticeship training through the Apprenticeship Trade Advisory Board and the Curriculum Review Board.

SKM is a founding Venture Partner of the Canada Masonry Design Centre (CMDC) and is proud to support CMDC’s local and national technical initiatives including the new Saskatchewan CMDC office which will provide technical support to the local design and construction communities.
